2011-2012 New Products

As some of you may have noticed, we updated our website for the 2011-2012 Home Snowmaking Season over the weekend. The website features some new products and changes to existing products. Here's what you will find new for the 2011-2012 season:

New Snowmaker Design

An all new snowmaker body design that features a one piece construction and an improved internal nucleating system. The one piece construction minimizes freeze up issues from occurring on even the coldest nights. The unique inner workings of the snowmaker body distribute the water in such a way that it "heats" the internal components to prevent them from freezing, including the automatic nucleation valve that handles all the air and water adjustments for you!

New Snowmaking Pumps

All of our snowmaking pumps have been changed for the 2011-2012 season. Our gas and electric snowmaking pumps are now available in 5.5 GPM and 7.0 GPM flow rates. All snowmaking pumps are now mounted on a convenient wheeled frame to make moving the pump around easier.

Best of all we increased the pressure on our snowmaking pumps from last season for those of you who want to use the snowmaking pump as a pressure washer when you are not making snow. A high pressure hose, cleaning lance, and pressure washer nozzles are included for pressure washing at no extra charge!

New Air Compressor Line

We teamed up with Mi-T-M Corp to offer you the best industrial quality compressors. These compressors may cost more than others, but they will last you for decades to come and exceed our expectations for home snowmaking. We offer many different sizes and styles, so check out our website for all the details.

The weather is starting to get cool and it won't be long until most of us can start making snow again. Now is the time to start thinking about the upcoming season and getting everything ready for the first cold night!

Jeremy in North Carolina sent us these pictures of the snow he made in 4 hours using his Veyron Snowmaker. He says the deepest pile was 16.5" in the middle, which is really good for only 4 hours of snowmaking.

High Humidity and Snowmaking

A lot of people assume that once it gets to be 32ºF or below you can make snow. This is not always the case. Snowmaking goes by the wetbulb temperature, which is the outside air temperature with the humidity level factored in. There are times when you can make snow above freezing and then there are times when you cannot even make snow when it is below freezing! Sometimes the humidity level plays the biggest role when it comes to making snow.

Generally speaking you can start making snow with a high pressure snowmaker when you get a wetbulb temperature of 27ºF or less. A garden hose snowmaker generally needs a wetbulb temperature of 28ºF or less before it can start making snow. When you have low humidity (50%) or below it is not uncommon to be able to make snow at 29ºF or even 30ºF with one of our snowmakers. However when the humidity is really high you might have problems making snow, even when the outside air temperature is in the mid to low 20's.

Snowmaking is all about heat transfer. This means taking the warm molecules out of the water you are trying to freeze into snow. When the humidity is high, it is difficult to transfer the heat from the water. Think about it like this. You feel much more comfortable on a 100ºF day with 10% humidity than on a 100ºF day with 100% humidity. Why? Because on the day with 10% humidity your body heat transfers a lot better compared to when the humidity is 100%.

While you might get a wetbulb temperature cold enough to technically make snow, you might not be able to if the humidity is too high. For example last night we tried to make snow when it was 27.4ºF and 93% humidity. While the wetbulb temperature said we should be able to make snow, all we were able to do is produce ice on the ground because the high humidity didn't allow for enough heat transfer to occur in the water to allow it to fully freeze into snow.

Early season snowmaking runs or trying to make snow in an area that is generally warm has it's own complications of warm water temperatures and ground that is not completely frozen. Add high humidity to the mix and it can be even harder to make snow. Another misconception is that if it is snowing outside, it is cold enough to make snow. This is generally not the case because the humidity will likely be very high while it is snowing, especially if the temperature is hoovering around freezing.

Many people ask if they can make snow indoors and the answer is no unless you can regulate the humidity level. The reason being running the snowmaker in an enclosed area will increase the humidity level quickly. This is because all the heat you are removing from the water will have nowhere to escape to since it is trapped in an enclosed area. Once the humidity gets too high, you won't be able to make snow.

Order Snowmaking Pumps and Packages Early

Although it may not yet be cold enough to make snow in your area, we highly recommend that you start purchasing any snowmaking equipment you plan to buy early. This is especially true if you are planning on buying a snowmaking pump or complete snowmaker package. Once the cold weather arrives for the first time in most areas, we get busy and often run into backorders on popular items. Our advice is that if you have been thinking about buying any of our products, that you do so before the cold weather arrives to most areas to avoid running into backorders on popular items.

Snowmaking Temperatures Have Arrived!

With ski resorts in Colorado finally making snow, snowmaking temperatures have finally arrived. We have been receiving calls and emails from people in the high elevations of California and Colorado who are looking to buy a snowmaker or make snow for the first time this season. With October halfway gone, it won't be much longer until the temperatures drop across much of the country so more of us can start making snow.

What's New for the 2010/2011 Home Snowmaking Season

In case you did not notice, we launched our new website for the 2010/2011 Home Snowmaking Season the other day. You will notice a few changes to some of our products along with some new products.

Here is what is new for the 2010/2011 season:


Snowmaking Pumps- We spent two years developing our snowmaking pumps. Our snowmaking pumps are available with either a 3gpm or 5gpm flow rate. All of our electric snowmaking pumps run on 115 volts so no special outlets are required! Best of all we can ship our snowmaking pumps via FEDEX Ground so shipping to a residence is not a problem!

The snowmaking pumps can double as a pressure washer for cleaning around the house when you are not making snow. A high pressure hose, cleaning lance, and pressure washer nozzles are included for no additional charge. The snowmaking pumps operate at a lower pressure than pressure washers, but still have more than enough pressure for cleaning. The lower operating pressure allows you to clean vehicles and other delicate surfaces without having to worry about damage from high pressure water.


Snowmaker Stands- We've had many different stands over the years for our snowmakers. Everyone seemed to like our metal tripod stands the best for their durability and ease of use on steep slopes. Our new tripods have angled legs that allow you securely position the tripod on a slope and to change the angle of the snowmaker based on wind conditions. The tripod legs quickly remove for storage.

When there is little to no wind, you can angle the snowmaker upwards for increased hangtime. This will allow you to make superior quality snow since the snow will have more time to cure as it falls to the ground. In windy conditions you can position the snowmaker to a more level position to pinpoint where exactly the snow will accumulate. The tripod stand is universal with all of our snowmakers. This means if you buy another snowmaker from us later on, you can buy just the snowmaker from us and mount it to your tripod to save some money.


Complete Packages- For your convenience we now offer complete snowmaking system packages. Our snowmaking system packages include a snowmaker, air compressor, and snowmaking pump/pressure washer. We have a few different packages available so we recommend you check out our website for more information.

We're Gearing Up For the 2010/2011 Home Snowmaking Season

It is hard to believe that the 2010/2011 Home Snowmaking Season is just around the corner. In just a few short weeks, some of you will be able to start making snow. After a brutally hot summer, we cannot wait to make snow this winter. Let's all hope Mother Nature gives us plenty of cold temps again this winter. Last season was a fantastic season for everyone, including for those of you in the deep south.

To say the least it has been a VERY busy summer here at SnowStorm Snowmaking. Hence why we did not post on our blog since the end of last season. We are pleased to announce we have a few new products for this upcoming season including 3gpm and 5gpm home snowmaking pumps that run on 115 volts and ship via UPS/FEDEX Ground! We spent two seasons perfecting these snowmaking pumps and are sure you will be amazed at how much snow they can crank out when the temps get cold enough! We also have some changes coming to our snowmaker line along with complete snowmaking system packages that include everything you need to make snow in your yard!

Our new website for the 2010/2011 Home Snowmaking Season should be online within the next two weeks. Normally we try to have it ready to go by the end of August, but due to some last minute changes to our snowmakers, we had to push it back into September. All of our new products listed above will be on the new website.

The picture above was taken after a few short hours of snowmaking using the Vector Excel Snowmaker and small electric pressure washer. As you can see, it made enough snow for a snowman!

Reminder about Christmas Orders

December is the busiest month for us here at SnowStorm Snowmaking. We have been extremely busy the last two weeks now that the temperatures have started to drop and that the holiday shopping season has begun. Since we have been so busy lately, we haven't been able to update our blog as often as we'd like to. We apologize about that to our loyal followers!

Our snowmakers are extremely popular for Christmas gifts and a lot of people wonder if we can guarantee delivery by Christmas. We try our very best to keep everything in stock at all times during the fall and winter season. However we get extremely busy from Black Friday until the day before Christmas Eve. No matter how hard we try, eventually an item becomes back ordered. While these back orders are usually filled within a few days, sometimes the demand for an item can place it on backorder for almost a week. If you plan on ordering any of our items for Christmas, we cannot stress enough the importance of doing it early. This way if we run into back orders, there is a good chance we can still get your order to you for Christmas.

We will ship up until the last minute for Christmas delivery. The last possible day to guarantee delivery for Christmas is December 23rd at noon. December 23rd is the last day we can ship anything to guarantee delivery by Christmas. Orders placed on December 23rd must be shipped Next Day Air in order for them to arrive on December 24th. If you must place an order on December 23rd, please contact us to verify the item you wish to purchase is in stock and to obtain a Next Day Air Shipping quote. Please note that none of the shipping companies deliver on Christmas Day so orders placed on December 24th will not arrive by Christmas.

Back in mid February DJ in Connecticut purchased a snowmaker from our parent company that designs and manufactures snowmakers for ski areas. The snowmaker he purchased is the big brother to our Maverick Hybrid Snowmaker. Both snowmakers make snow the same way, except the snowmaker DJ purchased is an all metal version that mounts to a tripod.

DJ ran his snowmaker off of a 185cfm tow behind compressor. He has city water with approximately 30gpm@90PSI. With his compressor he is able to flow a maximum of about 18.5gpm depending upon what the wetbulb temperature is. The above photos were taken after a single 8 hour overnight run running the snowmaker. He adds that the snowmaker was not running at full capacity until near the end the run when temperatures got cold enough to max the snowmaker out at 18.5gpm with the installed nozzle. He says the picture of the whale (pile of snow) is about 4 to 4.5 feet deep.

Pics From Greg and Leia In Alabama

Greg and Leia from Alabama sent us these pictures of the snow they made at home using our Veyron Snowmaker. In the deepest spots the snow was 1.5 feet to 2 feet deep! The cold spell across the entire eastern half of the United States is allowing people down in the southeast a rare opportunity to make snow for a long period of time. The results speak for themselves with the pictures we have been receiving.

Judging by the pictures Greg and Leia sent us, not only were the kids having fun in the only snow in town, but also Greg, Leia, and even the neighbor's dog! Our snowmakers are known to promote family togetherness.

Color Change to Snowmakers

As of October 1st, 2008 all of our snowmakers that have a tower and stand will be painted silver in color. This includes the Maverick Snowmaker, Maverick Hybrid Snowmaker, Vector Snowmaker, Avalanche Snowmaker, and Veyron Snowmaker.

Over the past few years we have had numerous requests from customers to have their snowmaker painted silver so that it looked just like one from a ski resort. With the rising cost of paint we decided to buy just silver paint in order to keep the manufacturing costs down on the snowmakers. This allows us to keep the snowmaker prices the same rather then increasing them. Additionally it makes our customers happy since the majority of them wanted their snowmaker silver in color.

The pictures of the snowmakers on our site will remain in different colors to help everyone identify the different snowmakers. Upon ordering, your snowmaker tower and stand will be shipped in a silver color compared to black, blue, or green.

Winter is getting close! If you don't already have a snowmaker from us it's time to get one!
