Home Snowmaking in Windy Conditions

Making snow in windy conditions is difficult for a wide variety of reasons. While you may not think 10 to 15 mph wind is much, it certainly is for snowmaking. Making snow in windy conditions is difficult even for the most experienced snowmaker. In fact some people who are avid home snowmakers won't even bother setting up their snowmaking equipment if the wind is over 10mph. We received a lot of emails over the weekend about wind so we have compiled the following tips to help you make snow in windy conditions.

The biggest problem with making snow in windy conditions is getting the snow to go where you want it to go. Even when the wind is at 0 mph you will notice the mist from the snowgun just hangs in the air until it falls to the ground. This is known as cure time and it is during this phase of the snowmaking process that the water freezes into snow. If the wind is at 5 mph, you will notice that the mist travels a distance away from the snowmaker. With winds at 15 mph the snow travels even farther away. This is primarily why experienced home snowmakers won't make snow in windy conditions. The snow they are making just blows away and goes into their neighbor's yard.

If you visit a ski resort you will notice most of the snowmakers are mounted on towers that range anywhere from 10 to 40 feet in height. This is to give the mist from the snowmaker increased cure time and allow the snowmaker to make the highest quality snow possible. The main reason why resort snowmakers have to be mounted high off the ground is because they flow a high volume of water. Since home snowmakers don't flow as much water, they can be mounted much lower to the ground. The lower a snowmaker is to the ground, the better it will perform in windy conditions. Some ski resorts lower the tower snowmakers to the ground so that they are just hovering over the trail in windy conditions. If they didn't the snow wouldn't get on the trail and it would go elsewhere.

The best tip we can give you for snowmaking in windy conditions is to not fight the wind. You will lose and your snowmaking experience will not be pleasant. If you position the snowmaker so that the wind pushes the mist back onto the snowmaker, you will eventually cause ice to build up on the snowmaker, and thus freeze up your nozzles. When this happens you have to wait for your snowmaker to thaw before you can make snow. So always position the snowmaker so that the wind doesn't push the mist back onto the snowmaker.

Another problem is having the wind not allow the nucleation nozzle mist to mix with the bulk water mist. If this happens, you will not make snow, but ice. External mix snowmakers are very difficult to make snow with in windy conditions because the nucleation nozzle setup sprays a VERY narrow mist. When the wind hits it, the mist often times blows around the snowmaker so that it doesn't mix with the bulk water nozzles. While our internal mix snowmakers often do better in windy conditions, they can do the same thing.

Even if the nucleation nozzle mist is mixing with the bulk water nozzles if the wind just pushes the mist to the ground before it freezes you will just make ice. Often times you will notice ice on the ground all around the snowmaker and snow on the ground a distance from the snowmaker. This is because the wind pushed all the mist to the ground before it had time to freeze and the only mist that froze into snow was the mist that traveled a distance away from the snowmaker.

While it may sound difficult to make snow in windy conditions, it's not impossible to do. Our advice to you is if you have trouble making snow in windy conditions that you just wait until the wind dies down. We guarantee your home snowmaking experience will be much more enjoyable and pleasant.

First Testimonial of the Year

Well it didn't take too long for one of our new customers to write to us about their first time making snow.

This comment was emailed to us from Mark in Minnesota:

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone at Snowstorm Snowmaking for all the help they gave me when I decided to purchase one of your snowmakers earlier this year. When I first got the snowmaker I found out that my pressure washer wouldn't connect to the snowmaker, but with help from Snowstorm Snowmaking I was able to get the pressure washer hooked up to the snowmaker using a different connector.

The other night I was able to make snow for about 2 hours before I had to pack everything away to get up early for work the next day. Not only did the snowmaker surpass my expectations, but it was priceless to watch my children play in the only snow in town.

I can't wait for next year. I have exciting things planned and hope to come back to Snowstorm Snowmaking for all my home snow making needs.

When we had updated our website last time we had updated some add to cart buttons on the site as well. When we updated our buttons for nozzles, plans, and our snowmakers we had made an error concerning shipping prices.

We have now corrected this and if you had ordered any of these items and were charged extra shipping, we have notified you and refunded you the extra amount you were charged.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you, especially if this turned you away from placing an order with us.

Snowmaker Sale- Employee Pricing

We know with the way the economy is right now that everyone is being cautious with how much money they are spending on holiday gifts this year. We know how popular our snowmakers are for gifts and for a LIMITED TIME only we are offering employee pricing on our assembled snowmakers (excluding the Maverick Hybrid).

You pay what any SnowStorm Snowmaking employee would pay for a snowmaker if they wanted one, and not a cent more. Just because we have temporarily lowered the price for this sale, doesn't mean that we have lowered the quality on our snowmakers. You get the exact same snowmaker as if it were purchased at the original price.

We are doing this as a thank you to all of our customers who have helped us out over the years. Our goal is to help everyone save money this holiday season if they are looking to buy a home snowmaker. We cannot offer these low prices for long so this offer is good for a limited time only. We will more then likely run this sale through the busy holiday season.

For more information on our snowmaker employee pricing sale be sure to visit the snowmakers page on our website for more details.

We have most snowmakers in stock ready to ship out, but with these low prices we expect backorders to occur. So order early to ensure a timely delivery for the holidays!

HURRY THIS SALE WON'T LAST FOREVER!

Color Change to Snowmakers

As of October 1st, 2008 all of our snowmakers that have a tower and stand will be painted silver in color. This includes the Maverick Snowmaker, Maverick Hybrid Snowmaker, Vector Snowmaker, Avalanche Snowmaker, and Veyron Snowmaker.

Over the past few years we have had numerous requests from customers to have their snowmaker painted silver so that it looked just like one from a ski resort. With the rising cost of paint we decided to buy just silver paint in order to keep the manufacturing costs down on the snowmakers. This allows us to keep the snowmaker prices the same rather then increasing them. Additionally it makes our customers happy since the majority of them wanted their snowmaker silver in color.

The pictures of the snowmakers on our site will remain in different colors to help everyone identify the different snowmakers. Upon ordering, your snowmaker tower and stand will be shipped in a silver color compared to black, blue, or green.

Winter is getting close! If you don't already have a snowmaker from us it's time to get one!

Snowmaking and Water Use

Here is a question we received from someone after they read our blog asking for questions pertaining to the environmental impact associated with snowmaking.

Q: If you make snow in your backyard (or at a ski resort) is the water wasted?

A: This is a common question we get from people who have a concern with the environment. Contrary to popular belief, snowmaking doesn't waste large amounts of water. In fact a study that was conducted by a major snowmaking company (for ski resorts), indicates that more than 85% of the water used for snowmaking at ski resorts is returned safely. In home snowmaking the percentage of returned water is greater, around 95% or more.

When a ski resort makes snow they typically draw water from a retention pond or large reservoir situated at or near the base of the mountain. The purpose of this is too cool the water and to recollect the water in the spring and summer when the snow melts. As you can imagine snowmaking uses a lot of water, and if a ski resort has to buy water each year it could get very expensive. If they can reuse the water they made snow with the previous year, not only do they help the environment, but they save money on water. The water is recollected in the reservoir as the snow melts and the water runs either directly down the mountain into the reservoir or the water flows into a piping network which ultimately returns the water to the reservoir.

If not all the water returns to the reservoir, most of it seeps into the ground on the mountain and trickles down into the water table. Some of the water evaporates when snow is being made or as the snow is melting. The evaporated water is then returned to the atmosphere.

Although snowmaking returns most of the water, you will still find some resorts have limits on how much water they can consume for snowmaking, where they can draw water from, and how long they can make snow. If a ski area doesn't have a retention pond, they could very easily drain a creek or small river of all the water. This is why the Government steps in to prevent this from happening. A good example is out in Colorado. Most ski resorts are only able to make snow in the beginning of the season. They get permission from the US Forestry Service to use water from September to the end of the year for snowmaking. After the New Year, they cannot make snow until September. This is fine for Colorado because they typically get enough natural snow to cover the entire mountain with snow for the season.

The reason why snowmaking at home returns more water is because it almost all seeps into the ground when the snow melts and finds it's way to the water table. This of course doesn't take into consideration the amount that evaporated during snowmaking or that was evaporated into the atmosphere as the snow melted. When the spring comes, you will notice your grass is much greener where you made snow compared to the rest of your lawn. This is because the water seeped down to enter the water table after the snow melted.

We hope this helps you understand how making snow in your backyard and at ski resorts doesn't waste all the water that was used to make snow.

New Snowmaker For Large Compressors

For all of you that have high output compressors (18CFM@90PSI or more) we have a new home snowmaker for you that will allow you to make more snow. Best of all you can run it off a garden hose or a water pump with significantly less water pressure then a pressure washer.

The Maverick Hybrid Snowmaker is a cross between a home snowmaker and ski resort snowmaker. It can flow between 1GPM all the way up to 70GPM of water depending on which nozzle we install. The bigger your compressor, the more snow you can make. The snowmaker can even make snow for tubing hills, small ski trails, and even cross country ski areas. All you need is a small fire pump and tow behind compressor and you can make loads of snow. Each snowmaker is custom made to your specifications.

The Maverick Hybrid Snowmaker is similar to the regular Maverick Snowmaker. It makes snow the same way, but it has a larger nozzle to flow more water and uses larger diameter piping and internal components. The regular Maverick Snowmaker maxes out at about 1GPM of water because most home air compressors cannot nucleate large amounts of water due to the low CFM they provide.

For more information on the new Maverick Hybrid Snowmaker check out our snowmakers page. If you have any questions on our new snowmaker or would like to get started custom building yours, please contact us!

Site Completed

Our new site for the 2008/2009 winter season is now up and running. We would appreciate that if you find any errors or broken links, that you report them to us by emailing us.

We are working on bringing a contact form back onto our contact us page. We had one there last year but experienced several problems with the form not sending us messages from everyone. We think the problem was with people using Windows Vista because our site was not built for Vista users at the time. Hopefully now we can place a contact form on our website without any problems.

It's Almost That Time Again!

Is it just us or did June and July fly by so fast? It seems like only yesterday the kids were getting out of school for the summer and we were having the Fourth of July picnics. Before you know it, August will be over and fall will be here. Once fall rolls around it won't be long until we start seeing people in the higher elevations starting to make snow. Last year at the end of September we had one of our customers make snow in the high elevations of Colorado. Besides getting cold for home snowmaking it will start getting cold for the ski resorts to start pumping out snow for the 2008-2009 season! Almost everyone here at SnowStorm Snowmaking is itching to get out and ride after a long summer break. Let's hope Mother Nature gives us lots of cold weather and snow this winter to make this season a great one!

We've been working hard at SnowStorm Snowmaking over the summer months. We've been busy filling orders for people in the southern hemisphere and getting ready for this upcoming season. We are just finishing up our new site for the 2008-2009 home snowmaking season. It should be up shortly with some new pages and an updated layout. Ever wonder how we manufacture our home snowmakers? Well you will get a chance to see with our new manufacturing process page. We show you how we develop a snowmaker and bring it to market. We explain how we use everything from Injection Molding to CNC machines to build the best home snowmaker possible.

Hang in there, only a few months left until we start making snow again!

NOTE: Click on the pictures above to view an enlarged view

Here are some pictures that Robert in Rhode Island sent to us last week. All of these pictures were taken last winter using our Vector Snowmaker. Robert ran his Vector Snowmaker off of his small electric pressure washer. Just look at the piles of snow he made with the small pressure washer. Now imagine just how big those piles could be with a larger pressure washer/pump and a Veyron Snowmaker!

Australia Shipping

At this time of year we get a lot of inquires for shipping our snowmakers to Australia because it's now winter time down under. We gladly ship worldwide, but sometimes run into problems shipping a few of our products, and Australia is sometimes a problem when it comes to shipping our assembled snowmakers or portable water misters.

For International Shipping we use USPS which is the cheapest way of shipping any International orders for us. Priority Mail is usually how we ship International orders. To most areas of the world Priority Mail International isn't a problem, but some places such as Australia are problems. USPS Priority Mail International has a maximum sized girth (size of box) allowed to enter countries. For most countries it's 108 inches with the length of the box and girth combined. Our biggest box for assembled snowmakers and portable misters, is 96 inches. The problem comes in to a select number of countries, including Australia. The maximum sized box allowed in is 79 inches. So if you order a snowmaker or water mister, there is no way we can ship it to you via USPS Priority Mail. We have to use Global Express Guaranteed which is roughly $365 for shipping to Australia, almost the same rates as UPS, FEDEX, and DHL.

To help combat the problem we have several back up plans if you still want one of our products, but don't want to pay a killing on shipping. For our snowmakers, we offer self build snowmaking kits where you can assemble a homemade snowmaker out of common plumbing fittings and special snowmaking nozzles. These kits don't include a stand and all the parts fit in a small box. This allows us to ship everything to you reasonably. If you still want a professional snowmaker, you can order just the snowmaking tower directly from us and we can ship it to you reasonably priced since we can place it in a long skinny box that is less than 79" in girth and length. You will then just have to mount the tower somewhere or make your own stand for the tower. For our water misters we have our water sticks and handheld mister, which you can use in place of our portable low pressure misters.

We always love to ship to Australia, but don't like how we cannot ship certain products without having the customer pay high shipping fees. So to help we came up with the solutions above. If you have any further suggestions, please contact us and let us know!

Beat the heat with our misters!

From the Midwest to the Northeast, we are experiencing a heat wave! Help beat the heat with one of our water misters! We have most misting products IN STOCK ready to ship same day or next!

Our most popular item this summer is our portable low pressure water misters. They seem to be popular around the pool deck and on the porch to keep the outside air cool. Not only do people love them, but pets do too! Looking to cool a large area? Then consider the dual nozzle mister with our larger size nozzles. Remember, the larger the nozzle, the larger the area that will be cooled in a shorter amount of time.

If you don't have room for the portable low pressure mister with the stand then our water sticks may be right for you. They are essentially the same thing as the portable low pressure misters, but with just the tower part.

If you want to stay cool while sun tanning or sitting around the pool, consider our handheld mister with the smallest size nozzle. It won't get you drenched with water while you hold it!

If you have any questions on any of our water misting products, feel free to visit our site or contact us at contact@aquamisters.com. We would love to hear from you.

Stay cool!

Summer Snowmaking Projects

Summer is a great time to start getting ready for making snow in the winter. After all, wouldn't you rather be making snow in the winter rather then tinkering with your home snowmaking system? We've already started to have orders placed by people gearing up for the upcoming winter season. Summer time is a great time to buy our kits or plans so that you can start building your snowmaker now and work on refining it before winter gets here.

We have all of our kits in stock along with most of our snowmakers. The summer is really the best time to purchase your home snowmaker to avoid backorders that often occur in the fall and early winter months.

Check back in with us this fall to see what new products we will have available for SnowStorm Snowmaking.

Portable Mister Review

We received this email comment from Elmer in Phoenix, AZ and decided to share it with you here on our blog.

Elmer writes to us about his Portable Low Pressure Water Mister he purchased from us last fall.

"Last summer while vacationing in Las Vegas, I noticed one of your misters on an outdoor patio deck at the hotel I was staying at. I asked someone at the hotel where it came from, and eventually someone referred me to your company. I purchased one of the low pressure water misters for myself last fall. All I can say is that it is AMAZING! Thanks to your mister, we have been able to keep cool while we sit outdoors. It's better than any other misting system I have previously had. It came to us fully assembled and I didn't have to hang anything! Your mister was so great at our Memorial Day picnic that family and friends plan to order a mister for themselves.

Thanks again for everything and I hope to buy more misting products from Aqua Misters"

Selecting a Nozzle Size

As summer approaches we have started to have an increasing amount of questions about choosing the correct nozzle size for your water mister. We are in the middle of creating a chart to help you decide what nozzle size is best for you, but until then here is some advice.

If your looking to cool a large area such as a deck or patio, you will want to get a medium to large size nozzle. The larger the nozzle, the bigger the area that will be cooled in a shorter amount of time.

If your looking to use the mister for personal use (such as keeping you cool when you sun tan) then you will want a small nozzle so that you don't get drenched with water. That's why our handheld misters come standard with the smallest size nozzle we offer.

Everyone has a different water pressure so that's why we have so many nozzle choices. For example our smallest nozzle produces 0.63gph of water at 40PSI. That same nozzle produces 1.00gph of water at 100PSI. You can see the big difference in the flow rate just within 60PSI.

Always remember, our nozzles show the flow rates in GALLONS OF WATER PER HOUR (gph). As long as your garden hose produces at least 40PSI of water, any of our nozzles will work for you.

As always if you still have any questions on our water misters or which size nozzle would be best for you, please do not hesitate to contact us!

New Product- Water Sticks

We have added a new product to our water mister line, the Water Sticks. These misters are essentially the tower from our portable low pressure water misters, without the stand. These towers are lightweight and can be mounted in a variety of places. The lightweight composite PVC material will allow you to put screws through the tower to mount it to the side of a post or tree without any problems.

The misters were originally developed so that they could be placed in areas where there was little space. Since then we have had these misters mounted to the sides of posts at restaurants and in the middle of pastures to keep horses and cattle cool. The tower can be pushed down in soft soil or placed in a dug out hole in your flower beds to water surrounding plants. The water stick is versatile and ready to help you with your water misting needs.

Available in assorted colors and in both single and dual nozzle with your choice of nozzle size.

For more information on the water sticks be sure to visit our websites listed below.

Water Mister Kits

We now have available for purchase self build water mister kits. These kits allow you to assemble one of our portable low pressure water misters. The kits come with everything you need to assemble the water mister and all the stand pieces are precut so there is nothing for you to cut! All you need to provide is paint for the stand (if you want to) and PVC cement if you decide to glue the stand together to keep it stable.

You get all the features and benefits of our portable low pressure water misters, but in an affordable kit form. The kit comes with detailed step by step instructions to show how the entire mister is assembled. The entire mister can be assembled in about 20 minutes to an hour based upon your mechanical skills. The only tool required to assemble the mister is a wrench to tighten the fittings.

Assembly is easy and you don't even have to be very mechanically inclined to assemble the mister. If you need help at any time assembling the mister, you can feel free to contact us for assistance.

The kits allow you to either build a single nozzle mister or a dual nozzle mister. As always you get your choice of misting nozzle sizes when you order your kit.

Shipping Fees To Rise on Misters

Due to increased shipping costs, we will be forced to raise the shipping rates on our portable low pressure water misters. The current rate is $25 for shipping within the USA, but this will increase to $35 for shipping within the USA later this week.

To help subsidize the increased shipping cost, we have introduced a self build kit for the portable low pressure water misters. This kit is shipped in a smaller box since the mister isn't assembled, and as a result it is cheaper for us to ship and we can pass the savings on to you. The kit is also discounted from the assembled low pressure mister price for added savings. For more information on the self build kits, please see the post above this post or visit our websites listed below.

If you plan on ordering a portable low pressure water mister, ORDER THEM NOW to save on shipping costs!

We apologize for the increased shipping fees. We hold off for as long as we can until we are forced to raise the shipping rates due to fuel surcharges.

Today is Earth Day- Go Green with Aqua Misters!

Everyone wants to help the environment. Watering your lawn or garden can consume a lot of water if you use a garden hose or sprinkler. Our high pressure water misters consume a lot less water than a garden hose and sprinkler, while cutting watering time in half!
If you have municipal water, you will notice an increased savings on your water bill if you water your lawn and garden with our high pressure misters as compared to with your sprinkler or garden hose.

Our low pressure water misters and handheld water misters feature energy saving misting nozzles that consume a minimal amount of water per hour. Our largest size nozzle consumes the same amount of water per hour that some garden hoses flow in a minute without the special nozzle! These water misters are perfect for use in areas with water restrictions since they consume such a minimal amount of water.

If we all pitch in and do our part, we can save water and a lot of other resources that will benefit us in the future!

www.aquamisters.com

www.snowstormsnowmaking.com

Handheld Water Misters

If you are looking for a way to keep cool this summer, consider our handheld water misters! These water misters come with the same misting nozzles our portable low pressure water misters use. The built in mesh screen filter prevents sediment and other gunk from clogging the nozzle. The standard size nozzle (0.63gph@40PSI), won't drench you with water, but rather a fine atomized mist. If this nozzle is too small for your needs, we have larger size misting nozzles we can add to your mister for no additional charge!

Customers who have purchased our handheld misters often use them when they sunbathe. The mister is also popular with construction workers who work long hours in the hot summer heat since it's compact size makes it easy to take to a job site. The mister can either be held in your hand or stand up by itself on it's round base. Other customers mount this mister outside for their pets to keep them cool on a hot day. We've had people mount this mister inside their outdoor dog houses and inside their barns and pastures to keep their horses cool! The possibilities are endless with this compact size mister!

The best part? NO PUMPING OR BATTERIES REQUIRED! Just hook up the mister to any standard garden hose and turn on the water!

Portable Low Pressure Misters

This week we are going to be featuring some of our water misters here on our blog so you can learn more about them. Today we will be focusing on our portable low pressure water misters.

You may recognize seeing these misters at a restaurant or hotel you visited. That's because we sell these misters directly to hotels and restaurants that are looking for ways to keep their guests cool on a hot summer day. Hotels often position these misters around their pool areas and outdoor lounge chairs to keep guests cool. Restaurants often place the misters in outdoor dining areas, near the outdoor bar, and near the front door to keep guests who are waiting to be seated cool. We have shipped these water misters around the world, and have had a fantastic response to them!

Here are some unique features that our patent pending water misters feature:

Stand:
The mister stand is constructed out of a durable composite PVC material that mimics our snowmaker stands. This stand breaks down for storage and sets up or breaks down in seconds with no tools required. The stand is painted in a UV resistant paint to prevent the paint from fading while outdoors. The stands feet also twist so that if the mister is on an uneven slope, you can pivot the feet to make the stand not tip over.

Nozzle: The special misting nozzles feature a built in mesh screen filter. Other misting systems do not have filters built into their nozzles. Without a filter, the nozzle is prone to clogging, no matter how pure your water is. With our misters, you simply can clean off this filter with water to remove any grime build up. Other nozzles cannot be saved if debris enter the orifice. You then have to buy a replacement misting nozzle, often at an expensive price.

Portability:
The entire water mister is portable. You can take it anywhere you want. Other outdoor misting systems confine you to one spot because they are permanently mounted. With our misters you just pick up the stand and place it anywhere you are looking to cool the outside air!

Fully Assembled:
Your entire mister comes shipped fully assembled. Just open the box when it arrives and insert your garden hose into the garden hose adapter on the mister. Turn on your water and enjoy your mister! Forget other misting systems that require cutting, hanging, bending, shaping, and installing hoses and fittings! Those water misting systems may cost less, but they can take hours to install! To make it worse, once the nozzles clog because there is no filter, you have to replace the whole system and go through the aggravation of cutting, hanging, bending, shaping, and installing hoses and fittings all over again!

Low Water Pressure:
The mister doesn't require a high pressure pump in order to work. An ordinary garden hose is all you need and let the unique misting nozzle do the rest for you! We offer a variety of different size misting nozzles for you to choose from. All of these nozzles are designed to keep you cool, without soaking you in water. Remember, the purpose of the mister is to evaporate the fine atomized water to cool the air, not to drench you with water! All of our nozzles consume such a minimal amount of water that you can run the misters in areas with water restrictions such as Las Vegas!

The features and benefits can go on! It really is no wonder why so many restaurants and hotels choose our portable low pressure water misters over other outdoor misting systems. Find out for yourself by ordering a portable low pressure water mister for yourself. We can guarantee you won't be disappointed!

We know our water misters are priced slightly higher than other misting systems on the market. But remember, our misters are portable so you can take them anywhere and they feature nozzles with built in filters. This filter will prevent the misting nozzle from clogging which will save you money down the road. Other misting systems are cheaper, but clog after only a few hours of use. You either then have to buy expensive replacement nozzles or have to replace your entire misting system. Also included in our price is a fully assembled water mister. Try getting the other misting companies to come to your house and install your outdoor misting system you bought from them! Don't forget that our 3 month warranty on all of our outdoor misting systems far exceeds any other warranty from any other outdoor misting company! In short, you pay for what you get! We are proud to say we fully stand behind all of our products that were built, designed, engineered, and packaged in the USA!
